SHAPESHIFTERS Seren Moran & Morgan Sims September 1 - 21, 2017
This month, Beatnik Studios brings the work of abstract artists Seren Moran and Morgan Sims to Sacramento in an exhibition entitled “Shapeshifters.” Moran is an Oakland-based painter with her most recent work bleeding more into assemblage and collage-like visualizations. Currently using recycled materials as her means for articulation, every material is carefully thought out and calculated. Primarily working with fabric, and specifically incorporating knots made of fabric, she explores the historical relationship between the material and women as well as utilizing knots as a metaphor for a woman’s more contemporary struggles in society. Chicago-based Sims creates sleek geometric designs using layers of organic color and texture as well as using a drip method to distort and pixelate recognizable symbols. Sims’ hard-edged lines coupled with rich pigments allow his graphic designs to retain a hand-made quality.
